With thanks to the author Heidi as well as Rachel Kennedy of Century Publishing for my copy of this book and spot on the blogtour.
A shocking discovery.
An island wrapped in secrets.
A tiny island community is stunned by the discovery of a long-buried body.
For Stella Harvey, the news is doubly shocking: the body was found in the garden of her childhood home.
The home her family fled without explanation twenty-five years ago.
Now, questioning her past and desperate to unearth the truth, Stella returns to the isolated Dorset island. But she quickly finds that the community she left isn’t as welcoming as she remembers – and that people in it will go to any length to protect their secrets.
But one thing rings true…
You can’t bury the truth forever.
This is the first book I have read by the author, but I had heard a lot about her books from friends, so when there was an opportunity for a review copy i jumped at it, and I have to say I’m glad.
The general premise of the story is similar to some popular themes in the genre at the moment, with a person who has moved away when young, and is going back to try and find answers to questions and piece together what happened back then. A child torn from their roots and then returning as an adult to rediscover them.
That’s where the similarities end though, there is a lot going on within this book to make it individual and to keep you entertained throughout. The Author considers how being uprooted can be confusing and difficult for the child, and continue to be so for the adult who didn’t get answers. She gets the reader to think deeply about how this wondering who you are and where you’re from an effect your life for many years, and how it is very much a part of human nature to want to know where we come from, it is natural to question and to want answers.
The book takes all of this, loos at relationships, for example our main characters relationship with her sister is a very cold one. The sister seems quite rude and standoffish, and we find out more about this as we go. But that kind of attitude, and it becoming more prevalent when faced with questions about their old home, just add to the mystery. Why did they leave?
The story takes two threads, following our characters now as the main character Stella tried to find out what happened, and the previous thread of the run up to the family leaving. I loved the authors ways of making this difficult for poor stella, from a family who either didn’t know or seemed to get hostile when the topic was broached, to the tight knit community who don’t want to talk to the ‘outsider’.
This was very cleverly done. With wonderful twists, turns and surprises from start to end, I had no idea what I was in store for! If you enjoy Psychological Thrillers with a thick ‘community’ and relationships thread running through it then this is the perfect read for you!
